Every year, ECCT volunteers organise a Strawberry Cream Tea Party in partnership with Age UK for older residents. Local school groups from St. Cuthbert’s School and Chelsea Academy perform drumming, dance, singing and a short play. Soloists perform and the Chelsea Belles, a seniors’ choir is always a big hit. In all about 200 people attend, including around 35 volunteers. Local grocery businesses provide some of the food, from strawberries to fillings for sandwiches. Local Age UK volunteers prepare the sandwiches in a Women’s Pioneer Trust kitchen and then serve the food.

This project aims to bring together older people and mothers and children for a relaxing friendly afternoon. It provides an opportunity for local school children to perform in public, especially those from the Chelsea Academy who are in their final year of music and drama. It is an opportunity for senior singers to build their confidence in singing songs they love in public and for the enjoyment of others. It enables older residents to play an active role in the community as organisers and volunteers for this highly enjoyable event.
